Full list of team-by-team signings and trades from the first week of moves

The new NFL league year kicked off March 12, but the chaos of the offseason was in full swing well before that.

We had stars receive franchise tags (Tee Higgins and Trey Smith), Pro Bowlers get traded (Geno Smith, Deebo Samuel and DK Metcalf), franchise quarterbacks receive pay raises (Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen), All-Pro edge rushers land record-breaking extensions (Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett) and a whole lot more. And all of that was before the NFL’s legal tampering period began March 10.

Once teams were able to negotiate with other clubs’ impending three agents, several high-profile deals were almost immediately agreed to. The biggest ones were the Seahawks signing Sam Darnold to a three-year contract worth $100.5 million and the Jets signing Justin Fields to a two-year deal worth $40 million. Elsewhere on Day 1, the Patriots added several key defenders for new head coach Mike Vrabel, the Texans traded their star left tackle to the Commanders and the Browns acquired a former first-round quarterback from the Eagles.

Day 2 brought even more movement, headlined by quarterback Daniel Jones signing with the Colts on a one-year deal worth $14 million. Meanwhile, the Vikings spent big for guard Will Fries and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen while the Texans traded away yet another former first-round offensive lineman, this time sending Kenyon Green to the Eagles for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Then at night, the Bills bolstered their pass rush with Joey Bosa and the Ravens added a contested-catch standout in DeAndre Hopkins.

Things slowed down the rest of last week, but there are still many big-name free agents to be had, including Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson.

From blockbuster moves to bargain-bin shopping, we’ve got you covered below with a running tracker of every team’s 2024 additions, including external signings and trade acquisitions. For more info on all the free agency deals and rumors, click here.

Top 5 free agents available include Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Stefon Diggs, more

A ton of dominoes fell on the first week of the NFL’s free agency period, with dozens of big names finding new homes or new deals with their current clubs. But there are still some good players available.

Quarterback is the NFL’s marquee position, so it makes sense to review what transpired at that position earlier this week. Justin Fields, after deciding to test free agency despite the Steelers’ attempts to re-sign him, agreed to a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets that includes $30 million guaranteed. Fields will get another chance to be a starting quarterback after going 4-2 as the Steelers’ starter in 2024.

Shortly after Fields landed with the Jets, the Seattle Seahawks signed Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million deal just days after trading former Pro Bowler Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders. Like Fields, Darnold will get another opportunity to lead an offense after helping lead the Vikings to a 14-3 record this past season. A few others got opportunities to compete, including Daniel Jones with the Indianapolis Colts and Kenny Pickett with the Cleveland Browns.

By the way, Aaron Rodgers is still available.

Now here’s a look at five of the top players who are still available. It should be noted that the following ranking is not solely about talent; it’s also about market demand and the position they play.

  1. Aaron Rodgers, QB
Rodgers might not the best player still available, but he is a future Hall of Famer who plays the most important position in all of sports, so him taking the top spot was kind of a no-brainer.

The Steelers and Giants have reportedly made offers to Rodgers, and there are rumblings that the Vikings might also be in play. New York’s offer was reportedly more lucrative than Pittsburgh’s, but money is reportedly not a big factor for Rodgers, who surely is hoping to end up with the team that can best help him end his career on a high note (if he decides to continue playing).

It’s anyone’s else when Rodgers will decide what he is doing next season. Until he does, the Steelers, Giants, and basically everyone else will continue to wait on pins and needles.

The Steelers did sign a quarterback last week by bringing back Mason Rudolph, a 2018 third-round pick who has an 8-4-1 record as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback.

  1. Russell Wilson, QB
Like Rodgers, Wilson is probably not the second-best player still available. But he is possible future Hall of Fame quarterback who was named to his 10th Pro Bowl in 2024. Wilson met with the Browns and Giants last week but left both facilities without signing a new contract.

At this point, it appears that Wilson may not sign with anyone until Rodgers announces what he is doing. The Giants appear to be the favorite for Wilson.

  1. Amari Cooper, WR
He might be getting older, and he didn’t exactly light up the stat sheet after joining the Buffalo Bills halfway through 2024, but Cooper is a proven route-runner who’s still got the wherewithal to be a solid starter.
  2. Asante Samuel Jr., CB
Injuries took a toll on his 2024 season, and before that, Samuel was a hit-or-miss type of cover man. He’s still just 25, though, and flashed big-play ability over four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  3. Stefon Diggs, WR
Like Cooper, another former Bills wideout, Diggs is aging at 31, and he’s also coming off a serious knee injury. But he remains a feisty possession target when healthy, very capable of manning a top job.

Mavericks’ P.J. Washington plays clutch hero with Luka Doncic out, Kyrie Irving silent in win vs. Nuggets

The Dallas Mavericks appeared to be on the ropes Friday night against the Denver Nuggets after they blew a 24-point lead in a matter of minutes to start the third quarter. It was Nikola Jokic’s return game after missing the last three, and the Mavericks, who were without superstar guard Luka Doncic were on borrowed time once Denver took its first lead of the game with 5:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Momentum shifted in favor of the Nuggets, and it felt like Denver would close out the game from there with Jokic preparing to put the finishing touches on what was yet another MVP-level performance. But the Doncic-less Mavericks, specifically PJ Washington, had other plans.

After the Nuggets took a 108-106 lead just over halfway through the fourth quarter, Washington proceeded to score nine of the Mavericks’ final 15 points, capped off by a steal that thwarted a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

The Mavericks avoided disaster, beating the Nuggets on the road, 123-120. Washington finished the night with 22 points, 13 rebounds and three steals, but it was his play down the stretch that won Dallas the game. His bully-ball drive and layup over the smaller Jamal Murray gave Dallas a four-point lead with just under 50 seconds left.

It’s the exact type of performance the Mavericks needed from Washington in the wake of news that Doncic would be out at least a week with a wrist injury. It was also sorely needed on a night when Kyrie Irving shot 37% from the floor and Klay Thompson was practically invisible in his zero-point performance on 0 for 8 from the field in 23 minutes of action. Irving scored just two points and missed all seven of his field goal attempts in the fourth quarter.

The win pushes Dallas’ win streak to four games, a positive trend for a team that was on a four-game losing streak right before that.

After the game, Washington mentioned that this recent win streak has been fueled by Dallas’ inexplicable loss to the Utah Jazz on Nov. 14, who at that point had only won two games this season.

“I think after that loss, we had a meeting and told ourselves we had to be better,” Washington said.

This win also gives the Mavericks a perfect 2-0 record in games without Doncic this season, after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder two games prior in which Washington also stood out by leading the Mavericks in scoring. That’s an important improvement for a team that went 4-8 in games without their franchise centerpiece a season ago. Seeing clutch performances from role players like Washington — and Naji Marshall, who led the Mavericks in scoring Friday night with a career-high 26 points — shows that Dallas can rely on other guys outside of Doncic.

That wasn’t always the case earlier in Doncic’s career, as he was expected to shoulder a significant amount of the workload on offense for Dallas, especially in clutch situations. Doncic is still at the center of everything the Mavericks do offensively, but this game showed us that Dallas may have some other guys who can be relied upon when things get tight.

Dallas will next take on the Miami Heat on Sunday. Doncic will once again be out, which means Washington and others will have to carry over this performance from Friday if they want to add to this winning streak and climb further up the West standings.

This win against the Nuggets also gives the Mavericks a glimmer of hope as it pertains to the NBA Cup, firmly positioning Dallas in the No. 2 spot in Group C behind the Warriors. Golden State already clinched the group on Friday night, but the Mavericks could reach the knockout stage as a wild card depending on how they finish out group play, which concludes for them on Dec. 3 against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Warriors first to clinch spot in knockout rounds

The 2024 NBA Cup is underway, as the league continues Year 2 of its in-season tournament. The fourth night of games took place on Friday with 16 teams in action. The Bucks, Rockets and Warriors were all able to stay undefeated in their respective groups, with Golden State becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the knockout round by virtue of their win over the Pelicans and the Nuggets’ loss to the Mavericks.

With the loss, New Orleans was the first team to be eliminated from knockout contention. Meanwhile the Rockets’ 28-point win over the Trail Blazers on Friday gave them a massive plus-49 point differential as they lead West Group A. On quite the opposite side of the spectrum, the Hawks lead East Group C with a point differential of minus-1.

Five more games are on the NBA Cup schedule for Tuesday night, as we inch closer to the conclusion of group play.

The NBA Cup courts have a different look in 2024, but the event largely has the same format as 2023, its inaugural year — even if that format could use some tweaks.

For those who need a reminder, here’s a brief summary of how the tournament works:

The NBA’s 30 teams have been split into six five-team groups: Three groups in the Eastern Conference and three groups in the Western Conference.
Teams are playing the other four teams in their group in round-robin style play on Tuesdays and Fridays between Nov. 12 and Dec. 3.
Eight teams (the six group winners plus one wild-card team from each conference) will advance to the knockout round. The standings will be determined by overall record, head-to-head record and point differential if a tiebreaker is needed (there are even more tiebreakers if necessary).
The knockout round will be a single-elimination bracket. The four East teams will be on one side of the bracket, the four West teams will be on the other. The final between the East and West winners will be held on Dec. 17 in Las Vegas.
Got it? Good. With the event in progress, we’ll be keeping track of the standings (and the potentially all-important point differentials) below.

Unbeaten Lakers, Bucks, Rockets in action Tuesday

The NBA Cup is back for Year 2, and the schedule continues Tuesday night with five games. The 2024 in-season tournament started Nov. 12, while the Warriors, Knicks, Pistons, Lakers, Rockets, Magic and Bucks stand tall in the NBA Cup standings. On Friday, Golden State (3-0) became the first team to clinch a spot in the knockout round by virtue of its win over the Pelicans and the Nuggets’ loss to the Mavericks.

With the loss, New Orleans was the first team to be eliminated from knockout contention. The Lakers, Rockets and Bucks will each take undefeated tournament records into Tuesday’s action. Three more nights are left in group play, so anything can happen.

The NBA Cup format sees all 30 teams participate, and they’re broken into six five-team groups for round robin group play. Those games are taking place on Tuesdays and Fridays between Nov. 12 and Dec. 3 and feature unique NBA Cup courts. There are three groups of Eastern Conference Teams and three groups of Western Conference teams.

The winners of each group (based on round-robin record and point differential if a tiebreaker is needed), plus one wild card from each conference (best record of non-group winner), will advance to the knockout stage, where the tournament becomes single-elimination all the way through the semifinals and final in Las Vegas.

Even skeptics of the NBA’s inaugural event (called the NBA In-Season Tournament in 2023) had to be impressed with the level of product the players and teams gave us last year. Everyone seemed genuinely invested and put their best foot forward to win the title and the $500,000-per-player prize. The Lakers claimed the crown. Tyrese Haliburton broke out as a superstar for the Pacers.

Below is the schedule for the entire 2024 NBA Cup. Group play will run through Dec. 3. The knockout round starts Dec. 10 and culminates with the title game on Dec. 17 in Las Vegas.
